Cannot read properties of undefined, NoneType has no attribute, NaN appearing from nowhere.
What went wrong: || uses the right side whenever the left side counts as false, and 0 counts as false.
The fix: return settings.retries ?? 3;
Remember: ?? only replaces null and undefined. || also replaces 0, "" and false.
